Shardul Thakur turned 30 on Saturday and he could hardly have wished for a better birthday gift than the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy. The Indian fast bowler was integral to CSK’s run to their fourth IPL title, finishing third on the Purple cap table with 21 wickets.

CSK shared a video of the team celebrating Shardul’s birthday, which came shortly after the end of the 2021 IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders. Veteran all-rounder Dwayne Bravo could be heard singing, “Oh Shardul it’s your birthday” to the tune of the song ‘In Da Club’ by the rapper 50 Cent.

Captain MS Dhoni can be seen feeding Shardul cake while the rest of his team mates poured beverages on his head. Shardul later shared pictures from the night on his Instagram handle. “Best birthday gift ever,” he said in his caption.

Shardul turned the momentum CSK’s way in the final with the ball. KKR were off to a good start while chasing a target of 193 with openers Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill putting up 91 runs in the first 11 overs. Shardul was the one who got the breakthrough, dismissing Venkatesh for 50 after which he sent Nitish Rana back for a duck.

Gill was dismissed in the 14th over by Deepak Chahar after which KKR’s middle order collapsed. Shardul did bowl rather poorly in the penultimate over, giving away two wides and a no-ball and conceding 17 runs that prompted an angry repost from Dhoni at the end of the over. But the chase was too steep for KKR by then and they ended up falling well short of the target.
